National Homemade Cookie Day - Memories

Courtesy of PublicDomainPictures.Net

Today, October 1st, is National Homemade Cookie Day. Gotta love the holidays!!

While I am not a baker (my sister got that gene!), I have family members who were (or are). My mother, Sharyn Ann Senecal Coughlin, made great snickerdoodle cookies. I miss those. My (step) great grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Madden Torrance, made great tarts. I remember we would "help" her make those when they came down to South Carolina for the winters.

So on this National Homemade Cookie Day, go enjoy some cookies and remember all the good times you had making or eating them with family members past and present!!

Thanksgiving 1967

I know where my parents were 50 years for Thanksgiving. At home in Jay and Au Sable Forks, New York. And below is the photo! It is of my father and grandfather with the buck my father bagged. Not the greatest photo but still a good photo!

And let's not forget the newspaper accounts:

Mr. Thomas Coughlin was a lucky man. While home form his naval base on furlough he had the good fortune to shoot a fine buck. It was his first. His dad Mr. David Coughlin was with him.

Tom Coughlin, who is home on leave, shot a 150-pound buck on Palmer Hill on Tuesday morning. In the party besides Tom were Dave Coughlin and Ned Hoey.

I am thinking that my grandmother, Helen Torrance Coughlin, wrote the second one and her aunt, Margaret Madden wrote the first. Grandma loved details!!!

Now I know the story of the deer head that I swore stared at me in the hallway at night 😁

Happy Canada Day!!

Happy Canada Day!

From the Plattsburgh Daily Republican, July 1, 1939:

To Our Canadian Neighbors:

The Daily Republican, in behalf of the people of Plattsburgh, welcomes our neighbors from across the International border on this national holiday known throughout Canada as Dominion Day.
We join you in an International Goodwill celebration, with every desire on our part to make this celebration enjoyable for both you and ourselves.
We commend our own American Legion Post, No. 20, which sponsored the celebration, our Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs for their united efforts to insure its success.
Plattsburgh extends the hand of welcome and greetings of goodwill to you, and fervently hopes this joint Canadian-American celebration will further cement the friendly relations existing between our two peoples.

So Happy Canada Day everyone!!

Happy Canada Day!

Today is "Canada Day" formerly known as "Dominion Day" for all our Canadian friends and relatives!  My mother, Sharyn Senecal Coughlin, always said Canada Day was the start of a week of fun in the North Country of New York.  Dad (Thomas Raymond Coughlin) said it was really the start of summer as school got out at the end of June.  It is also a time when Canadians and Americans do shopping on either side of the border!

In attempts to get those tourist dollars, programs are scheduled.  Here is the advertisement for activities in 1939:

I did find out the Dominion Day became Canada Day in 1982 after many decades of discussions.

So to my Canadian friends and family, Happy Canada Day!  Let the parties begin :)

Happy Columbus Day 2012

While looking for a Newspaper Nugget regarding Columbus Day, I came across the following in the

October 7, 1971

local news (aka GOSSIP) section of The Adirondack Record-Elizabethtown Post, written by my step-paternal grandmother, Helen Torrance Coughlin:

My first thought was Grandma C must have gotten her dates mixed up and it got published incorrectly.  Then I went to the trusty Google search and found out she wasn't wrong (I know~never doubt a grandmother!!).  It was in 1971, at the height of the Vietnam War, that the government decided to make as many federal holidays as possible on Monday (so glad to see where priorities where).  Public pressure changed Veterans's Day back to November 11th in 1978.

So now that we have had a history lesson today (one of the federal holidays I actually get off!!), time to go research, research and find clean clothes for work tomorrow!!

Happy Columbus Day!!!
