Obituary

After an illness of only four days, Raymond Duprey, youngest son of Elmer Duprey, died at his home in Swastika Nov. 12. His death was caused from diabetes, the result of the “flu” three years ago.

He was apparently as well as usual until Saturday morning when he said he was very weak.  Medical aid was obtained at once but the physicians gave no hopes for his recovery. Although only sixteen years old he was a very popular young man.

He is survived by his father, five brothers, Orril of Au Sable Forks, Wilfred, Wilbur, Edward and Chester of Swastika, and three sisters, Miss Addie of Newport, R.I., and the Misses Florence and Valedia, who reside at home. His mother died eight years ago. He was buried in the family plot at Black Brook. The pall bearers were Peter LaDuke, Leo Douglass, Joseph and Edward Carmel, Mose and John Betters, all friends of the young man.

Mr. Duprey and family have the sympathy of the entire community. They extend thanks to all who so kindly assisted them in their recent bereavement.

Raymond was my first cousin twice removed. He was also a fellow Pisces having a birth date of 13 March 1904.  He was only 16 years old when he died.

I had planned on just doing the obituary of my paternal 2nd great grandmother, Ella Johnson Hall (1858-1925) but then I thought this would be a great time to do my next entry in the "52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks Challenge" (especially since I have no photos of her!!)

Ella (Johnson) Hall

Mrs. Ella (Johnson) Hall, whose serious illness was reported in the last issue of The Record-Post, passed peacefully away at her home just south of the village last Saturday forenoon at 11:30 o'clock, in the 68th year of her age. Deceased was born in Clintonville March 20, 1858. While still a young lady she married Ira Hall and had, previous to coming here, resided at Tarrytown, in Moriah and at Plattsburg.

Mr. and Mrs. Hall and four children came to Elizabethtown to reside in the spring of 1897, just about 28 years ago, since when {then} they have lived continuously a short distance south of this village, excepting the summer of 1899 when they were located in "the old house" on Durand Farm.

To those of us who knew her well Mrs. Hall's life was so pure and humble, kind and true, through pleasant and through cloudy weather, that we may say that today, though her mortal form shares the stillness of the tomb, her spirit, in triumph, goes marching on. Life to this kindly woman was like an ever swinging pendulum between a smile and a tear.  So faithful and so patient, however, so true to real Christian teachings was this good woman that those near and dear to her fell that the memory of this worth-while character will remain to encourage, indeed that her commendable example will continue to cast shadows ahead, witnessing the sunrises and sunsets of coming years.

Mrs. Hall was of the Methodist persuasion and those of that faith who worked with her here and elsewhere admired and respected her for her quiet, abiding faith and wholesomeness.  She will be missed in the church circles where she was so highly esteemed.  However, it is in the family circle where this true hearted and ever faithful wife and mother will be most missed. To the members of the sorrow stricken family bereft of the companionship and advise of this rare woman the sincere sympathy of this community is extended.

It may well be said of Mrs. Hall: She has fought a good fight; she has kept the faith; She has earned the right to rest from earthly labors. What more can be said of mortal?

Deceased is survived by her husband, three sons, Earl of Keene Valley, Jesse and Loren of Elizabethtown and one daughter, Miss Beatrice Hall, also of this place. One brother, George Johnson of Ticonderoga and a sister, Mrs. Olive Kee, widow of Alexander Kee, of Los Angeles, Cal., also survive. A daughter, Miss Blanche Hall, born in Elizabethtown in 1897, died in the Champlain Valley Hospital, Plattsburg, in September, 1917.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hall were held at her late home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. D.C. Abbott officiating.  Interment in Riverside cemetery.

I remember reading this before for the biographical information and had forgotten about what I call an eulogy in the middle of the obituary! Gotta love the verbous writing of yesteryear!  But now I have a few more places to check!

She sounds like she was quite a lady!!

Connecting the Dots - My "AHA" Moment

Ever run across an obituary that lists a known relative but you can't figure out the connection? I've had the following obituary for a few years:

John Maple

John Maple, 60, was found dead in his home, Kent street Keeseville, Wednesday afternoon at 1:15 o’clock, after neighbors had reported to State Police that they had not seen him that morning as usual.  Dr. J.H. Evans was called and he stated that Mr. Maple died of a heart attack, and had been dead about 10 hours.

Only known survivors are several cousins, Mrs. Daniel Coughlin, of Palmer Hill, Mrs. George Frasier of Darby, Pa., Mrs. Frank Pattno of Plattsburgh, Pvt. Charles Williams of Camp Stonesman, Calif., and Mrs. Marie Finnessey of Schenectady.

The remains were removed to R. Prescott Company’s Undertaking Parlors.  Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

I am not actively researching this line but as both sides of the family are from the same area if I see something that mentions the line I am not working that day then I save it for future viewing.  I have looked at this obit from time to time but didn't see the connection.  The only person I knew was Mrs. Daniel Coughlin of Palmer Hill, my paternal great grandmother, Bridget Agnes Williams Coughlin (1883-1973).  

Then when I was researching something else (as is always the case) I found the connection to Mrs. Frank Pattno.  She was the former Orilla Frazier (1885-?), the daughter of my paternal 2nd great aunt, Margaret Dewan Frazier (1857-1927) sister of Agnes' mother Mary Dewan Williams (1854-1916). 

So when I accidentally clicked on John Maple's obituary last weekend, I decided to work on it.  Found a few more collateral relatives. Also solved my puzzle.  John Maple was the son of Mary and Margaret Dewan's sister Elizabeth Dewan Maple (1859-1939). EUREKA! 

I looked at the other names mentioned.  George Frazier (1893-1980) and Marie Frazier Henessey (1895-1972) were Orilla Frazier Pattno's siblings. George was still alive so not sure why "Mrs. George Frazier" was listed.  Finessey was actually Henessey but sometimes in genealogy those things happen!

Charles Williams is still my mystery.  I haven't worked much on the Williams line yet but so far no Charles has surfaced.  Just another item on the To Do List!!

The moral of the story...it pays off to look at items again after you have found other connections because the dots will be there (hopefully) and the puzzle will be solved!!

Philip L. Duprey - Obituary

Philip L. Duprey, 72, of Peasleeville, died at home Wednesday evening after a long illness.

He was born in Black Brook, May 6, 1983, the son of Eugene and Linda Sharrow Duprey. He was a retired carpenter.

Mr. Duprey is survived by his wife, the former Albertine Bourdon; three sisters, Mrs. Thomas Willis of Au Sable Forks, Mrs. Leondard Durgan of Peasleeville and Mrs. Ernest Senecal of Au Sable Forks; a brother, George of Peasleeville.

The body is at the Delorme Funeral Home where calling hours will begin Thursday afternoon.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Philip Duprey

Peasleeville - Funeral services for Philip Duprey, 72, of Peasleeville, were held Saturday morning in St. Patrick's Church, West Peru.  The Rev. George Phillips, pastor of the church celebrated the Requiem High Mass.

Bearers were Alden Wright, Chester Banker, Noah Bashaw, Richard Frenia, Robert Millette and Richard de Stefino.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

NOTES:  His mother is listed as "Linda Sharrow Duprey" and it should be "Melinda Sharrow Duprey".  Uncle Phil died a week after my parents were married.

Agnes Williams Coughlin - Obituary

AU SABLE FORKS - Agnes Coughin, 89, died Tuesday at the CVPH Medical Center.
   
She was born Dec. 20, 1881 in New York, the daughter of John and Mary (Dawne) Williams.

Survivors include three sons, Bernard J. Coughlin of Syracuse, David F. Coughlin of Jay and Daniel E. Coughlin of Leister, Mass.; two daughters, Anne Thompson of Plattsburgh and Elizabeth Coughlin of Au Sable Forks; 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home will be today and Thursday form 2 to 45 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. from the Holy Name Church. Entombment will be in the church cemetery.

Noticed the birth year is listed as 1881 but other sources, including tombstone, state 1883. She went by her middle name of "Agnes" and her first name was "Bridget".  Also have yet another spelling for her mother's surname that I have found as Dwan, Duane, Devan....and I'm sure there are more!!

Thomas Willis - Obituary

Thomas Willis

AU SABLE FORKS – Thomas Willis, 83, died Thursday at the Keene Valley Hospital in Keene Valley.

Mr. Willis was born April 3, 1893, the son of John and Rosan (McGinis) Willis.  He was a veteran of World War I.

Survivors include his wife Mamie (Duprey) Willis, and one brother, Frank Willis of Au Sable Forks.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home here.  Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Church here.  Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Thomas Willis was my maternal great uncle by marriage.  I remember my mother was very close to Uncle Tom and Aunt Mamie and was sad that she was unable to travel to New York for the funeral.  Of course travel then is not like travel today.

Prosper Senecal - Obituary

SENECAL DIES OF INJURIES RECEIVED IN CAR ACCIDENT

Prosper Senecal, 46, of Keeseville, died late Wednesday night of last week [sic] of injuries received in a car-truck collision Tuesday, October 17.

Death occurred at the Champlain Valley Hospital in Plattsburgh, where little hope for Mr. Senecal’s recovery had been entertained.

Mr. Senecal suffered internal injuries when his light truck collided with a sedan operated by Mrs. Thomas E. (Gladys) Bombard, 36, also of Keeseville.

The collision occurred at the junction of the Port Douglas and Mace Chasm Roads.

Mrs. Bombard, also injured in the accident, is confined at the Champlain Valley Hospital. Her major injuries are a knee fracture and arm lacerations.

Mr. Senecal, a native of the Town of Black Brook was born on March 19, 1912, a son of Henry and Ida (Santor) Senecal.

He is survived by his widow, the former May Rushia; one son Gary; two grandchildren, all of Keeseville.  Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Verla Raby of Plattsburgh.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning in St. Augustine’s Church in Peru.

The Rev. William Laballee, assistant pastor, was celebrant of a High Mass of Requiem.

Bearers were Francis Norman, James Rushia, Ernest Senecal, John Douglas, Roger Senecal and Hector Rushia.

  Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mary Dewan Williams - Obituary

September 22, 1916

MRS. MARY DEWAN WILLIAMS

Mrs. Mary Dewan Williams, wife of John Williams, born at Palmer Hill in 1854, died at her home in Lake Placid, September 14, 1916, with heart disease after an illness of two years.  Mrs. Williams was a good and kind neighbor, respected by all who knew her.  She married John Williams January 1, 1869.  Until 12 years ago, when they moved to Lake Placid, they made their home on Palmer Hill.  Mrs. Williams leaves a husband and two daughters, Mrs. George Hoag and Mrs. Daniel Coughlin of Ausable Forks, two sons,  John, Jr., and Edward, and seven grand-children, two sisters and one brother.  The funeral services were Saturday, September 16, at the St. Agnes Church, Father Savage officiating.  Burial was at Ausable Forks.

Mary is my paternal great-great grandmother.

George Sharrow - Obituary

George Sharrow

George Sharrow, a lifelong resident of th Ausable Valley, died at this home on Forge street [sic] in this village about midnight on Monday, aged 53 years.  Mr. Sharrow was born at Black Brook, and for the past twenty-eight years was a faithful and trusted employe [sic] of the J. & J. Rogers Company.  For several years past he had been afflicted with heart trouble, and for five weeks prior to his death he was in a serious condition.  He is survived by three sons-Sharrille, Augustin and Horace; and three daughters, Mrs. Lorn Snow of this village, Rev. Sister Mary Sebastian of Port Henry, and Miss Augustine of this village.  One brother, John Sharrow of Rutland and two sisters, Mrs. E. Duprey and Mrs. O. LaHart of Forestdale aslo [sic] survive.  The funeral will be held from Holy Name church this morning at 9 o’clock.

George Sharrow is my maternal great-great uncle.

Bernard J. Coughlin - Obituary

AuSable Forks-Funeral services for Bernard J. Coughlin, 73, who died Saturday at Crouse-Irving Memorial  Hospital in Syracuse following a long illness, were held Monday at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home in AuSable Forks.
     The Rev. Theodore Gillette, associate pastor of Holy Name Church, celebrated the mass.
     He was born in AuSable Forks May 20, 1907, the son of Daniel and Agnes (Williams) Coughlin.  He lived for many years in Worcester, Mass.
     He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Ruth) Stein of Pennsylvania and Mrs. Donald (Myrval) Ellis of Massachusetts; seven grandchildren; one brother, David Coughlin of Jay, and two sisters, Mrs. Howard (Betty) Myers and Mrs. Gerald (Ann) Thompson, both of Plattsburgh.
     Bearers were Raymond Cash, Daniel Phebus, Robert Thompson, James George, Raymond LaBombard and Wilfred Laundry.
     Burial was in the family lot in Holy Name Cemetery.

Obituary appeared in the Plattsburgh Press-Republican on July 24, 1980.

Bernard was my paternal great-uncle.  Below is a picture of his grave taken during my 1992 trip to the North Country.  He is buried with his parents.

July 6, 1939

John Senecal, Sr., long time resident of this vicinity died June 29th following an illness, resultant from advanced age. Death occurred at this home of his sister-in-law in Keeseville, where he had lived the past year.

Mr. Senecal was a well known figure in Au Sable Forks and vicinity where he had made his home for the past eighty years.  He was born in Champlain, N.Y., on June 24th, 1849, and soon thereafter moved here.  He owned and actively managed a farm in Swastika ans was also for many years affiliated with the lumber industry.

He is survived by two sisters [sic], Mrs. Edward Disco of Bloomingdale and Mrs. Arthur Rougeau Dudley of Black Brook; and by three sons, John, Jr., and Henry Senecal of Au Sable Forks and George Senecal of Glen Valley.  He is also survived by twenty grandchildren.

The funeral was held at St. Matthew's Catholic church in Black Brook, Rev. Father Doyle officiating, with burial in the cemetery there.  The Misses Mary Bean, Mary Meconi and Mary Deloria, members of Holy Name choir of Au Sable Forks, sang during the service.  The bearers were six grandsons, Raymond and Ernest Senecal and Wilfred and Hector Rogeau of Au Sable Forks, Prosper Senecal of Black Brook and Edward Disco of Bloomingdale.

Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Sharrow) LaHart - Obituary

     Solemn requiem high mass services for Mrs. Elizabeth LaHart were held last Thursday morning at St. Matthew's church, Black Brook.  The mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father Bellville, assisted by Rev. Father J.E. Doyle as deacon; Rev. Father George Brisson, sub-deacon; Rev.    Father J.J. Kelly, master of ceremonies; Rev. Father H.J. Brisson and Rev. Father Boulerice.

     Miss Mary Bean was the organist with the choir from Holy Name church consisting of Mary Meconi, Mary Deloria, Marie Lyon and Thomas Nugent.

    Pallbearers were Bert Mousseau, Mose Douglass, Earl Sharrow, August Sharrow, Ben Betters and Henry LaHart.  Internment was in the Black Brook cemetery.

   

    Born November 11, 1881 at Swastika, the daughter of the late Napoleon and Delia Sharrow. Mrs. LaHart had been a lifelong resident of the North Country.  Before her marriage to Oncio LaHart on April 29, 1905,

she had worked for many years at Paul Smith's Hotel and at Loon Lake.  For many years she and her husband had conducted a tourist home at Forestdale, many out-of-town guests patronising them year after year.  Mrs. LaHart had always been a hard-worker and was held in high esteem by all who knew her.

     A shadow of gloom was spread over the hamlet of Forestdale when word was spread of her death on Tuesday, June 9, after a prolonged illness of two years.  During all theat time she had never been heard to complain and conscious to the last made all arrangements for her funeral.

     Among the out-of-town residents who attended the funeral services were Miss Josie Sicotte, Sherrington, Quebec; Mrs. Richard Worrell, Rochester; William Ellis, Lake Placid Club; Mrs. Peter LaFountatin, Indian Orchard, Maine; Augustine and August Sharrow, Brooklyn; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sharrow, Rutland, Vt., and many other relatives and friends.

The obituary states her father is "Napoleon" Sharrow but it was actually Alex Sharrow.  Napoleon PINE was Delia (Paquette/Pockett/Pacquette) Sharrow's second husband.  

David Francis Coughlin - Obit

David Francis Coughlin

JAY-David Francis Coughlin, 75, died unexpectedly Friday, June 8, 1984, at Lake Placid Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Lake Placid on March 20, 1909, the son of Daniel and Agnes (Williams) Coughlin.

He spent most of his younger days near Palmer Hill near AuSable Forks.  For several years, he worked in a defense plant in Worchester, Mass.  He worked for many years as a salesman for Plattsburgh Electric Supply.

Mr. Coughlin was a communicant of Holy Name Church, in AuSable Forks and was a former member of the Jay Fire Department and the AuSable Forks Board of Education.

His first wife, the former Constance Hall of Keene Valley, died in Worchester in January 1946.  His three brothers, Bernard, Daniel and Thomas, died earlier.

Survivors include his wife, Helen (Torrance) Coughlin; three sons, Douglas Coughlin of Hudson Falls, Thomas Coughlin of Ladson, S.C., and David Coughlin (Gilbo) of Saratoga Springs; three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Nancy) Carte of Schenectady, Miss Betty Coughlin of Oscoda, Mich., and Mrs. Robert (Alice) Plumadore of Clayburg; two sisters, Mrs. Howard (Betty) Myers and Mrs. Gerald (Ann) Thompson, both of Plattsburgh; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Beth Torrance of Jay; 17  grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Calling hours were held Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home in AuSable Forks.

The funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Church in AuSable Forks.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Donations may be made in Mr. Coughlin's memory to the Holy Name Church Debt Reduction Fund.

I remember this like it was yesterday.  My father had just retired from the Navy (20 years) and we were on a REAL vacation visiting friends and family.  We were on our way to visit my grandparents when we got the news the night before we were to be in Jay that Grandpa had died.  He was getting in a round of golf before we came.

The Calling Hours were a shock to me.  Two days in shifts.  I remember being overwhelmed by the whole thing and the director of the funeral home, Charles "Charlie" Zaumetzer brought me back to their living area to watch TV.  I remember him telling jokes and being very nice to us.  (Of course, quite a few members of both sides of the family went through his funeral home!)

Old Resident of Black Brook Dead

Elmer Duprey, one of the oldest residents of Black Brook, died at his home in that community last Saturday afternoon about 5 o'clock, after a lingering illness of nearly a year.  Mr. Duprey, who was born in Canada was 73 years of age, and had spent 69 years of his life in the town of Black Brook.  He was widely known throughout Clinton and Essex counties, and had a host of friends who will regret to learn of his passing.  He is survived by five sons, Wilfred, who resides in California, Orrel of Lake Placid, Wilbur of Albany, Edward of Black Brook and Chester of Black Brook; three daughters, Mrs. Addie Frange of California, Mrs. Florence Douglass of Black Brook and another daughter residing in Detroit.  One brother Eugene of this village, and a sister, Mrs. Ellen Stebbin of Brooklyn also survive him.  The funeral was held from St. Matthew's church, Black Brook, on Monday at 9 o'clock, and was largely attended.  Interment was in St. Matthew's cemetery.

Delia Pockett/Pacquette Sharrow Pine -Obituary

The death of Mrs. Delia Sharrow Pine, aged 75 years, occurred at her home on Forge street on Wednesday morning of last week, the immediate cause of her death being stomach trouble.  The deceased was born in Canada, coming to Au Sable Forks with her parents when but eight years of age, where she has always resided.  She was a devout Catholic and highly respected by all.  The funeral was held from the Church of the Holy Name on Friday, Rev. Clarence A. Kitts officiating, interment being in the Black Brook cemetery.  The deceased is survived by six children:  Louis Sharrow of Clintonville; George Sharrow, Au Sable Forks; John Sharrow, Rutland, Vt., and Mrs. Levi Betters, Mrs. Eugene Duprey and Mrs. Oncio LaHart of Au Sable Forks, to whom the sympathy of the community is extended.

Treasure Chest Thursday-Ira Hall Obituary

Don't you just love it when you find something on a family line you are not even working on yet??  I found this brief note on my paternal great-great grandfather, Ira Hall, in the "Lake Placid News, Friday, March 21, 1930"

Ira Hall died Saturday night.  He was an old resident of the town and well known.

I had to laugh when I first read it.  Short and simple.  A genealogist's nightmare!!

So another search found this obituary in "The Record-Post, Au Sable Forks, N.Y., Thursday, March 20, 1930".

DEATH OF IRA HALL
     Ira Hall, whose illness was reported in the last issue of the Record-Post, died at his home a short distance south of Elizabethtown village Saturday night a little after 8 o'clock, in the 75th year of his age.  Two weeks before his death he was partially stricken with paralysis.
     Deceased was a son of the late Amasa Hall by his first wife and grew up in the Keeseville section.  In his young manhood he married Miss Ella Johnson, whose death occurred five years ago.
     Ira Hall was for a time located in Butte, Montana, shortly after that city had been laid out by his brother-in-law, the late George Wood, an elder brother of our venerable townsman Robert H. Wood.
     In 1885 Mr. Hall was employed at Tarrytown, N.Y.  A few years later he worked for the late "Lock" Reed of Moriah.  In the winter of 1896-7 he was employed on a lumber job in the Roaring Brook section of Elizabethtown conducted by Allen H. Laverty.  In the spring of 1897 his family joined him in Elizabethtown, since which the family residence has been here.
     Mr. Hall was a good general gardener, being employed by William M. Kingsley at "The Balsams" and later by Ed. Lee Campe at Legdewood Farm several summer seasons.  He was fond of horses and flowers and had had successful experience as a landscape gardener, being able to make shrubbery and plants grow.
     He is survived by three sons-Earl of Keene Valley, Jesse J., Elizabethtown plumber, Loren C., Elizabethtown painter and paper hanger-and one daughter, Miss Beatrice Hall, who is connected with the Keene Valley Neighborhood House.
     Funeral services were held at his late home Monday afternoon at two o'clock, the Rev. H. H. Pittman officiating.  Interment was beside the grave of his wife in Riverside cemetery.

WOW.  I know have his father's name, which was previously unknown to me.  I have collateral lines to add to my tree and research.  And I now know the gardening gene passed me by on BOTH sides as my mother was into gardening as well. I have killed not one but TWO cacti.....it can be done!!

Cordelia Yelle Obituary

MISS C. YELLE DIES; SERVICES ON THURSDAY

Miss Cordelia Yelle, 74, who had been in failing health for some time, passed away at midnight at her home, 64 Main Street.

Miss Yelle was born at Black Brook on Feb. 10, 1874, the daughter of the late Octave and Cleofia Feucreault Yelle.  For many years, she worked for Stern's department store in New York City.  She had resided in Saranac Lake for the past 11 years.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ida Rondeau and Mrs. James Disco, both of this village.

The body is reposing at Keough Memorial chapel.  Funeral services will be conducted at 9 o'clock Thursday morning in St. Barnard's church.  The body will be placed in the vault to await burial in the spring.
