Siblings Day 2020

April 10th is Siblings Day. So I decided to do a chart to see how many siblings my direct line had. Not surprised too much but I did see gaps where I need to focus my research when I have time. And I should note these are KNOWN TO ME siblings through research. I feel like I may be missing a few here and there. Again, I'll add it to the list 😉

National Homemade Cookie Day - Memories

Today, October 1st, is National Homemade Cookie Day. Gotta love the holidays!!

While I am not a baker (my sister got that gene!), I have family members who were (or are). My mother, Sharyn Ann Senecal Coughlin, made great snickerdoodle cookies. I miss those. My (step) great grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Madden Torrance, made great tarts. I remember we would "help" her make those when they came down to South Carolina for the winters.

So on this National Homemade Cookie Day, go enjoy some cookies and remember all the good times you had making or eating them with family members past and present!!

FGS Conference 2019 or Bust: FOOD

FGS Conference 2019 or Bust: METRO

I have been taking Metro for almost 17 years now to get to work. It's a love-hate relationship BUT for getting about in the metro DC area, it is a great option. Here are some notes for those of you who may not have been on the DC Metro system.

Here's a map of the whole system. The Omni Shoreham Hotel is located near the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan station on the RED Line.

PLEASE NOTE:  There are six (6) stations closed for platform repair on the Blue and Yellow lines south of the Ronald Reagan National Airport. Please see Commuter Page's information on alternatives. Also the Metro website, which is also known as WMATA, has service alerts listed with shuttle bus information.

Cards. First, you will need a SmarTrip card as Metro got rid of paper passes for both trains and buses. The cost of the card is $2.00 and you still need to add fare money to the card.

The fare machines do take cash and credit cards. (Note: If paying by credit card, get the receipt. Metro does have hiccups from time to time with transactions. Better safe than sorry is my motto!) The estimates for what the value of the trips will be on the fare machine.

THE TRAIN DOORS ARE NOT LIKE ELEVATORS. THEY DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY REOPEN. 

Train cars. We have the "old" trains and the "new" trains. The "new" trains are the 7000 series trains. You may hear announcements that you are on one of these or that this train will be servicing the platform. These trains did NOT come with safety features for the visually impaired. Several people have fallen been the trains as there were no safety chains on them. They are slowly correcting it but until then they make the announcement assuming that you know what they are talking about. No worries must of us daily riders wondered about the announcement too!!

Handicap or Priority Seating. There are handicap or priority seats on the trains by the doors. Some of the older trains only have them by the center doors.

Elevators. There is an elevator from the platform to the main level and then again from the main level to the street at all the stations. Metro is renovating some of the them. I would check the Metro's Elevator and Escalator Service Status to make sure the station you will be using is not under renovation if you will need an elevator. If it is out of service and you are eligible then they will arrange for a shuttle bus to get you to the next station with a working elevator.

The elevator at Woodley Park is located on the right side after you exit the fare gates. It will be before the fare machines. If you are not looking for it, you can miss it. I keep thinking it's a door!! The elevator comes out a block NORTH of the station so you will have to go an extra block South to get to the hotel.

You will come out at the corner of Woodley Road and Connecticut Avenue.

Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan Metro Station. If you are taking the elevators, stay to the right after exiting the fare gates. If are taking the escalators, welcome to the Metro systems's 3rd longest escalator!! (My daily stop has me going to Bethesda, the system's 2nd longest escalator ...and yes, I have had to walk up them more times than I wanted to!!!)

Once you get to the street level, you have 2 choices, go right or left. If you go right, you are on 24th Street. Take a left and then you will cross the street (Calvert Street) at the street light and the hotel is in front of you. If you go left, you will be on Connecticut Avenue. Take a right and then at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Calvert Street you will take another right and the hotel will be down a block on the left.

Miscellaneous. When on the escalators, stay to the right as the walkers will be on the left. These are folks who are probably running late to work! Always add time to the expected commute especially on Saturday. The trains do not run as frequently on the weekends and the system opens at 7:00 am. Take a look at Metro's Trip Planner for planning your trip. It will show estimated times departure and arrival times. Also, the lighting in some of the stations is dimmed. So it's not you, it's them!

I hope I covered at least some of the basic questions you may have concerning traveling by Metro. If I didn't cover a question you may have, please let me know. I am not know the answer but may know where to find it!

FGS 2019 Conference or BUST

I will be going to the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) Conference in August in Washington, DC. For me it will mean getting up AND out earlier than normal to make my commute into DC. And of course they have sessions scheduled at 8:00 am each day that I really want to be at!! 

This will be my first FGS Conference. I did go to the National Genealogical Society (NGS) Conference back in 2011. When it was in Charleston…..and it coinciding with my nephew’s first birthday…..so multiple tasks, one trip...worked out perfectly!!!

I did a scouting session last weekend to see where the hotel is in relation to the Woodley Park-Zoo Metro station (much closer than I realized).  And to see what restaurants are in the area for those of us who may not be doing the sponsored lunches (more than I thought there’d be!). 

I am going to do a few separate posts instead of one long one as I know what my attention span can be like at times. First up after this introduction will be on getting to the conference hotel via Metro. I have taken Metro daily for the last 16 years (17 in September). While I do not claim to know all about Metro, I will give you an overview. If you have never had to take public transportation in the DC area, an overview will be helpful. Trust me, I wish I had had one when I first started using it daily!! Second will be the restaurants. I’m already looking forward to that part!!

So I hope this series of posts will be useful to at least one of you fellow FGS-Bound attendees!!

DNA Day 2019

As more people are testing, ethnicity estimates are changing. My AncestryDNA results changed to more of what my genealogy research reflects. I first blogged about DNA Day back in 2017 at Happy National DNA Day . Now to compare the changes.

So now my maternal line is reflected in the estimates. So happy to see the update!!

With the AncestryDNA updates, more cousins are being added to the matches. For me, it's been more 4th-6th cousins. Still hoping for those matches that will break down a few of my brick walls. Until then, the search continues......

I checked my FamilyTree DNA results. Nothing changed with them. Still getting the Scandinavian matches. I'm sure there's a connection...somewhere in the great tree of life!!!

Leah Duprey Jacobson is my maternal grand aunt. My mother, Sharyn Ann Senecal Coughlin, was only 7 when Aunt Leah died but remembered how sad everyone was that summer. I remember my mother saying she always thought Aunt Leah and her name were beautiful.

Wedding Wednesday - Coughlin-Senecal

Today would have been my parents 52nd wedding anniversary. Thomas Raymond Coughlin (1944-1998) and Sharyn Ann Coughlin (1945-1992) were married on April 18, 1966 at Holy Name Roman Catholic Church, Au Sable Forks, Clinton County, New York. The wedding reception was held at the Rendezvous Restaurant, Route 9 North, Au Sable Forks, Clinton County, New York.  Here is a great photo from the reception!

I am thinking that my grandmother, Helen Torrance Coughlin, wrote the second one and her aunt, Margaret Madden wrote the first. Grandma loved details!!!

Now I know the story of the deer head that I swore stared at me in the hallway at night 😁

Happy National DNA Day!

Yes, there is really a National DNA Day!! It is promoted by National Human Genome Research Institute at NIH aka National Institutes of Health. Their focus is genetics and genomics (branch of molecular biology) but genealogists love it too!

I have had my DNA tested through Ancestry and Family Tree DNA. But to be honest, I have not had much success with connecting with any potential cousins out there. I have sent a few emails out with no responses. Those were cases where they did not have a lot posted but I was able to figure out how we are connected. I was proud of myself finding the connection with only a few people listed!! For Family Tree DNA the closest matches I have we have no idea how we are connected!! 😕

But one of the reasons I wanted to take the DNA tests were to see the ethnic breakdown. The results were more or less what I thought. I did have a larger British Isles make up than I thought. That comes from the Coughlin-Hall line for sure!

Ancestry has me at 11% Scandinavian while Family Tree DNA has me at 3%. Yet on Family Tree DNA most of the close matches have Scandinavian names!! And 66% British Isles on Ancestry compared to 44% on Family Tree DNA.

As a close friend commented "no matter how you slice it Coughlin, you are still white toast"!!!  🍞😊

Coughlin - Senecal - Wedding Announcement

Today my parents would have been married 51 years. They married on a Monday and until their deaths "Monday, Monday" by the Mamas and Papas was one of their favorite songs. Always think of them when I hear it!!

Coughlin-Senecal

Thomas R. Coughlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Coughlin of Jay and Sharyn A. Senecal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Senecal of Au Sable Forks, were united in marriage at a nuptial mass on Monday, April 19 at 11 A.M. in Holy Name Church. Rev. John Downs officiated at the ceremony. The attendants were Allen Strong and Jessie Hoey.

The bride wore a white suit with rose accessories and the maid of honor wore a pale blue suit with beige accessories. Both Mr. Coughlin and Mr. Strong, members of the U.S. Navy, were their uniforms.

A reception was held immediately after the ceremony at the Rendezvous Diner, where a delicious dinner was enjoyed by all present.

Out of town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Donald Carte of Keeseville, Mrs. R. Plumadore of Saranac; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Nugent of Jay; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gilbo and Mrs. Grace Denton of Port Henry.

After their honeymoon, the couple left for Charleston, South Carolina, where Mr. Coughlin, a member of the U.S. Navy, is presently stationed. They will make their home at the Isle of Palms, near Charleston.

First, the wedding was actually on April 18th not the 19th. My father was not the greatest when it came to dates. He had a watch with dates and names in it. It was always fun to watch him try to remember a date and he realized he had a different watch on!! When Dad was retiring from the Navy and filling out forms, he called me and asked if Mom was home. I said no. He said "great. What's our wedding anniversary?" I said "what no watch?". I can't give the answer he gave me but suffice it to say he did get his answer. And of course like many times before and after this he said, "and don't tell Mom"!!!

I recognize most of the names except for Grace Denton. Not sure of any connection. I know Henry and Mildred Gilbo were also from Port Henry. Mildred was my father's aunt through his mother, Constance Hall Coughlin, who died when he was 2 years old.

In my recent move, I found the scrapbook Mom kept from their honeymoon. I need to photograph it soon.

Week Four: Hall

It's only taken me 7 weeks to get to Week 4 of Family History Month and there we are!! The focus this "week" is Hall, my paternal grandmother's line. This is a line I know very, VERY little on. My paternal grandmother, Constance Hall Coughlin, died when my father was less than 2 years old.

I need to research and find out what happened to many of these family members. I would like to see if there are any more living cousins out there. I was fortunate enough to meet in person one of my mother's Duprey cousins last year. I know there are a few more out there so the cousin hunt is on!!

October is Family History Month in the United States.

I am going to consider this a "New Year" of sorts. As I have done...basically NOTHING this year as far as researching or posting about my family, I will start anew. My goal is to post at least once week about each of my grandparents lines. So my schedule will be:

Week of October 2:    Duprey

Week of October 9:    Senecal

Week of October 16:  Hall

Week of October 23:  Coughlin

I admit I will be starting with the family line I know the most about at this point, Duprey. The last 2 weeks will be the hard ones for me as I know little about my father's side of the family really. I have some names and places but few photos or stories. 

So this month I encourage you to start working on your family trees if you have not already. Start going through those old photos and if you are lucky enough to have older relatives around ask them if they remember when some of those photos were taken. You might find out something new!!

So Happy Family History Month!! And have fun!!

Military Spouse Appreciation Day

Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day. My mother, Sharyn Senecal Coughlin, was a military spouse for the first 17 years of her marriage to my father, Thomas Raymond Coughlin. I remember all the things she had to put with when Dad was gone on his year long cruises. Cars breaking down, house repairs not to mention my sister and I and doing it by herself. We were in South Carolina and both families were in New York so no calling family for help. As I got older, I realized the sacrifices my parents each made in order for my father to serve our country.

From the insignia looks like Dad was a Petty Officer First Class (E-6) at this point.

Believing in Miracles - 22 February 1980

Yes, I am still here!! 

But that's not the miracle I am referring to at the moment. It's been 36 years since the "Miracle on Ice" aka the US Men's Hockey Team defeats the USSR's Men's Hockey Team. 

I still remember that night. It was a Friday and I got to go to the local roller skating rink on Old Trolley Road in Summerville, SC (think it was Hot Wheels??). Which is ironic since I only skated a few times, the last time was cracking my wrist. Never skated again but still a great place to hang out! Mom picked me up and when we got home the game was still on. The third period was about to start and the Soviets were winning.  I didn't really follow hockey at the time but my father was really into the game as was my mother so I stayed up and watched. We were a very happy family by the end of the game!!

My paternal grandmother sent us the Plattsburgh Press-Republican at the time which included inserts during the Olympics. Below are the pages of the win!!

   We join you in an International Goodwill celebration, with every desire on our part to make this celebration enjoyable for both you and ourselves.

   We commend our own American Legion Post, No. 20, which sponsored the celebration, our Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs for their united efforts to insure its success.
